Paradox
by Mariana Mussetta
Is it so
Than when we grow
Wiser and smarter
We also get dumber?
How can it be
As time goes by
For us to see
With our own eyes
How fool we've been
All along
In being so positive
About right and wrong?
We used to think
In black and white
And we were blind
To understand
That so much more
Than what we thought
Was gray and blue
And red and brown.
We were so sure
Of our own taxonomy:
We had an answer for each question,
For every phenomenon
An explanation.
How clear, how simple
Our lives were.
No political correctness.
No guilt to bear.
And now that life discloses
Raw truths and farfetched clauses
We find ourselves cursing
Our ignorance of the past
And yet we fail to see
It is as bright as light:
A universal premise
In the essence of mankind
There is still so much to learn
So much darkness to overcome
So much more humane to become. In this contradiction
We struggle, move and battle.
Were we wiser to be dumber
When we thought we were that smarter?
Are we dumber as our minds get wider
Trying to climb yet higher and higher?
The more we know, the less we know
And in the process, who in the world knows
We may enlighten our souls
