Can friendships at work be harmful?
by Joaquín Díaz Astarloa
ICA Student - Level 8
Most people argue that it is important for co-workers to have good relationships. However, recent studies suggest that friendships at work can cause problems. In fact, there are people who cannot help getting into trouble when they start a good relationship at work.
Firstly, many employers who open a new industry, for example, don't want to share their benefits with a close known partner, like a friend. Indeed, these people argue that working with an old friend can make that apparently endless relationship go sour and have bitter rows in public. Therefore, most employers prefer to work alone to sharing profits with an old friend in order to elude problems.
Secondly, friendships at work can also be harmful when both friends dispute a promotion. In this case, the employees and also friends start being arrogant and deceitful to each other. Moreover, the possible fight between them, induced by competitive work and ambition, can make their relationship collapse.
In conclusion, I would say that although most people argue that it is substantial to get on well with your partners, friendships at work can create problems. So, in my opinion, I think people should avoid getting into business with old friends.
